Re-Oriented

Re-Oriented is a photographic series toying with Arab female archetypes in 19th century Orientalist painting and shot with the desire to twist the plots and challenge the fantasies these women embodied for the Western gaze; further internalized as true by Arab women themselves.

These images are conceived as a tool to shift the narrative -inviting 6 of Tangier’s female cultural movers and shakers, women with a direct professional impact on their communities and telling their stories through action and agency.

Aligned with Nawal Saadaoui’s thinking, we believe a Re-Oriented gaze, and a re-positioning (both geographical and philosophical) of ourselves as central figures of society will free up so much space for us to claim the culture without fulfilling any expected fantasy.
